Terrance has pointed me to some really interesting feature in Solr, called Facets. After reading the documentation, I am going to try and guess how this is implemented, based on my understanding of how Lucene works. But first, let me explain what Facets are, Facets are a way to break down a search result in a way that would give the user more meaningful results. Software processes has always been a popular topic of discussion in our industry. Those can get quite heated, with advocates of the “stable / stale” Waterfall method pointing fingers toward “rapid / rabid” Agile methods, with the CMMI people throwing documents around and Lean people standing on the sidelines muttering about Waste.
